Japanese-Language Programme for High School Students
Mr Samuel Bennett (The Correspondence School, Nelson) and Ms Shirley Shen (Diocesan School for Girls, Auckland) participated to the Japanese-Language Programme for High School Students from 1 July to 15 July 2009. They learnt Japanese language, culture and society with other high school students from around the world at The Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Kansai Japan.

I am very grateful to the people of The Japan Foundation for giving me this wonderful opportunity to participate in such a life-changing program. The two weeks I spent in Japan were truly eye-opening: they allowed me to gain a new perspective on a completely different culture and experience things I would never be able to do in my own country. The expectations I had for this trip were far exceeded. The Japanese people were very welcoming; the cities and places that we visited were extremely beautiful; and the cultural experiences and knowledge I gained will stay with me forever.
The course also gave me the opportunity to become good friends with people from all across the world, and many types of people that, ordinarily, I wouldn’t have the chance to meet. I am sure we will be friends for a long time even though distance may separate us.
Life in the institute was very comfortable. The rooms were very well furnished and the people from the Japan Foundation were extremely reliable. They provided for our every need and made sure there were absolutely no problems during our stay in Japan. There were a few students on the course, including myself, who had special dietary needs, and the institute catered wonderfully for us all.
I have been studying the Japanese language for over 3 years now. Participating in this study program has truly increased my desire to continue with my studies, plus gave me the chance to use Japanese in a completely new way. I feel that having to rely solely on my Japanese skills really helped improve my fluency and vocabulary. I feel confident that I will soon be able to take Level 2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test because of the new knowledge I obtained from this program.
The study trip that we took part in on the second week of the program was fantastic. In Kyoto we had the chance to see a very traditional style of Japanese living. Kyoto was the original capital of Japan, and many of the buildings from the time that it was the leader of the empire still remain today. I have a great deal of respect for the Japanese culture and having the opportunity to learn more about the traditional lifestyle was very valuable. However Tokyo provided a sharp contrast with its large crowds and bustling nightlife. The night that some students and I walked from Tokyo Tower to Shibuya is one that I will never forget. It really gave us an opportunity to see Japanese city life and the various types of people that call Japan home.
The city that made the most impression on me, however, was Hiroshima. I had seen the famous genbaku dome many times prior to the trip, but actually being there and seeing the place where such a tragedy occurred was truly impacting. Everyone on the trip was deeply affected by the visit to the Peace Memorial Museum, and it really made Hiroshima a memorable place for us. We felt it was especially important as we visited just 2 weeks before the 64th anniversary of the nuclear attack.
Overall, this trip exceeded my expectations in every way. Only by being fully immersed in the language and culture of this fascinating country can you truly appreciate it. My visit is one that I will never forget and I’m very grateful to all those involved with providing this wonderful opportunity.

このプログラムに参加する機会をいただいたことを、国際交流基金の方々にとても感謝しています。日本で過ごした２週間は、私にとって人生が変わる体験になりました。私の国では決して経験できない、まったく違う文化に新しい視点を得ることが出来ました。この旅行は、私の予想をはるかに上回るものでした。日本の人はとても優しかったですし、訪れた場所もとても綺麗でした。私が得た経験や知識は、決して忘れないでしょう。
さらにこのプログラムで、世界中の人と友達になることができました。遠く離れていますが、これからもずっと友達でいられると思います。
関西国際センターの生活はとても快適でした。国際交流基金の方々は、参加者のすべてのニーズに応えてくれていました。部屋は家具が備え付けられており、スタッフの方は本当に信頼できました。私を含め、「特別の食事条件」を持った人がいましたが、センターの人にとっては全然問題ではありませんでした。
私は３年間日本語を勉強していますが、この学習プログラムに参加したことで、ますます勉強を続けるモチベーションが増しました。また、日本語だけの環境で過ごしたことが、さらに流暢さと語彙の向上に役立ちました。この滞在で経験したことをいかして、日本語能力試験の２級を受けたいです。
第２週目の研修旅行は素晴らしかったです。京都で伝統的な日本のライフスタイルを見る機会がありました。京都は昔の日本の首都です。そのときからのたくさんの伝統的な建物がまだ残っています。日本の文化をとても尊敬しているので、伝統的な日本を見ることができて嬉しかったです。でも東京のたくさんの人とナイトライフとは対照的でした。東京にいた夜は、友達と一緒に東京タワーから渋谷までに歩きました。歩いているあいだに、都市のなかの生活をみたり、いろいろな国からの人々と会うチャンスがありました。
広島を訪れたことは私の心に深く残りました。旅行の前に、有名な原爆ドームの写真を何度も見たことがありましたが、実際に広島に行って、それを見ることは、とてもインパクトがありました。広島への原子爆弾投下の６４年目の記念の日の2週間前に広島を訪れたことは、重要なことだと感じました。
この旅行は、私の予想よりもずっと素晴らしいものでした。日本語と日本の文化の環境の中にいることが出来たことに、とても感謝しています。この旅行のことは決して忘れません。また、この機会を与えてくれた皆さんにとても感謝しています。
日本の旅行 - Shirley Shen (Diocesan School for Girls, Auckland)
七月一日から十五日まで初めて日本に行きました。日本に二週間いて、ただで、旅行をしたり、日本の文化を習ったりするプログラムに参加したんです。これが、私が自分で飛行機で外国に行った最初の旅行だったから、かなりしんぱいしました。なぜなら、もし、旅行に行くなら、いつでも、家族か友達か知り合いといっしょだったからです。大阪についた後で、世話をする人が私にすぐたいざいする予定の関西国際センターという所につれて行ってくれました。センターのスタッフの全員が本当にやさしかったから、すぐなれて、いろんな国から来たちがう文化や習慣を持つ人々と友達になりました。
毎日９時から１時まで日本の文化とか、習慣とか、大阪のほうげんとか、日本のアニメとか、若い人の言葉とかたくさんならいました。一番面白かったのは大阪の方言だと思います。例えば、大阪の方言でだめのことをあかんといいます。面白いと思いませんか？
じゅぎょうが終わった後で、私はよく新しくできた友達といっしょに自転車でデパートへぷりくらをとりに行ったり、花火をしたり、浴衣をきたり、七夕祭りとか、いけばなとか、おちゃとかいろんなイベントにさんかしたりしました。このかんそうは全部始めてだったので、わくわくしました。
それから、けんしゅう旅行のために、東京や京都や広島に行きました。ふつかめに、平和記念館に行ったのですが、記念館に入った時は悲しい気持ちになりました。その中で、ひばくしゃのげんばくでやけた体のいちぶをみていたら、「どうして、つみのない人々がこんなつらいめにあわないといけないのだろうか？」と思いました。戦争はあってはならないと思います。早くかくへいきがなくなって、平和な世界になってほしいです。これは本当に心にのこる体験でした。
私がこの旅行でえた事は一人で前より何でもできるようになって、自分にもっと自信がついた事とせんそうはよくない事だから、やってはいけないんだという事です。また私の経験のはばがひろくなって、すこしせいちょうしたかもしれません。
Two Essay Winners Go To Japan
Mr Samuel Bennett (Nelson) and Ms Shirley Shen (Auckland) are going to Japan on the Japanese-Language Programme for High School Students 2009. They are the winners of a Japanese language essay contest which The Embassy of Japan conducted in April this year. The Japanese Language Programme for High School Students are organised by The Japan Foundation in Japanese Language Institute Kansai and the two participants will study Japanese language, culture and society there on 1-15 July 2009.
We hope that Mr Bennett and Ms Shen will make the trip meaningful and unforgettable.

２００３年７月１日より２００３年７月１５日まで、ニュージーランドより３人の高校生が「国際交流基金・高校生日本語学習奨励研修」に参加しました。
以下は、３人のレポートです。

毎日おきてから自分のへやのまどから日本が見えましたけど日本にいるのは信じられませんでした。せかいで十一つの国の人々があつまりましたからいいともだちをつくりました。そのともだちにまだメールを書いています。それからこのりょう行でいっしょに日本にいたのでいつまでもその人のことをしっています。みんなはわか者だから一番おもしろいクラスはわか者の言ばでした。「ありえない」とか「ちゃうちゃう」とかがおかしくておもしろかったです。日本人のわか者のファッションにちょっとおどろきましたね。ある日くりはら先生はクラスの前にはっぴょうをしました。「けんしゅうりょう行のあとでグループではっぴょうをしなければなりませんからけんしゅうりょう行中にしゅくだいがあります」と言って私は「いやだ」と言いました。でもくりはら先生は聞こえましたから「なんで、いい日本語のチャンスがあるがんばって下さい」と言いました。その時からいっしょけんめいしゅくだいをしました。いつまでもくりはらさんとくりはら先生のことをわすれないと思います。けんしゅうりょう行にはならと京都はでんとうてきな日本でしたから一番おもしろかったけれど東京のぎんざはあかるくてにぎやかでした。東京にとまるよるにはじめてのしゃぶしゃ
ぶを食べて見ました。おいしかったです。でもけんしゅうりょう行にかんして一番いい日は文化やれきしをならったり行くのはひつようだと思います。こん回はじめて日本に行きましたから今日本が大好きになりました。いいぶんいきをかんじられました。やさしい人、きれいなけしき、おもしろいれきしがあって大好きです。日本が大好きでたまりません。今、もうニュージーランドに帰ってきたのに日本に帰りたいんです。ニュージーランドに帰ってからから私の日本語のクラスの前にスピーチをしました。写真をみせてプリクラをあげてクラスメートの日本についてのしつもんに答えました。にんなは「もっともっと日本に行きたい」と言いました。私たちは日本にいる間に本を買うために五千円をもらって私は本を四さつ買いました。文法の本とじしょと日本語のうりょくしけんの本とかん字の本を買いました。帰ってからもいっしょうけんめい勉強をしようと思いました。それからその本をつかって今もいっしょうけんめい勉強しています。もっと日本語を勉強したいですね。日本に行ってそんないい人にあってそんないいところに行ったので関西国際センターいろいろありがとうございました。

今日は。
私にとって今度の旅行は本当に意味深い旅行でしだ。たくさん習って忘れられない旅行でした。この前までは日本語だけして、日本の文化についてはあまり興味がありませんでした。そして、日本語をどう勉強すればいいかも分からなかったし、日常生活に使われる言葉もよく分かりませんでした。私の近くに日本人が全然いないし、学校の教科書も古いからです。自分で日本の文化に関する資料を探すのは限界があったので、日本についてよく分かりませんでした。
でも、この旅行でたくさんの国から来た色々な人々に会って、他の人達はどうして勉強しているかアドバイスをして貰ったり日本語を練習したりして私には本当に助けになりました。特にニュージーランドから来たジンさんの言ったことは、助けになりました。私も日本人の友達をたくさん作って日本語を練習したいと感じました。
旅行中に日本の文化についてもたくさん習いました。日本の色々な所に行ったり、見たりする度に、私は２年間日本語を勉強しているのにこんなに知らなかったのかと、ちょっと恥ずかしかったです。私がこの旅行の間に感じたのは外国語を習うといることは言語と文化と一緒に勉強しなければならないということです。そして私は日本人のように話せるようにがんばろうと思いました。
だから私は今から日本のテレビを見たり、日本の音楽を聞いたりしてもっと一生懸命に努力します。
私は日本で経験したことを日本語のクラスメートと友達に話しました。みんな、日本に行ったことがないし、日本についてもよく分かっていないので私が話したことや写真は彼らの日本語の勉強の助けになったと思います。特に日本語のクラスメートは興味深そうでした。宮島や広島や東京の新宿などの写真を見せた時は全員が私のことが羨ましいと言って、いつかきっと日本に行きたいと言っていました。
私も絶対もう一度行きたいです。忘れられない経験を私にさせて下さってありがとうございました。日本のことを考える度に今回作った良い思い出を思い出しそうです。これからも日本語をもっとかんばっていつかまた行きたいと思っています。

THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ON JAPAN TRIP
I would like to take this opportunity to first of all express my sincerest gratitude to Japan Foundation and OFIX for giving me such a great opportunity to go to Japan; one which I will take on very personally and treasure the experience for a lifetime.
During the study programme I had the privilege to experience the many diversities of the Japanese culture such as Sad?, Ikebana and Traditional Japanese lifestyles (e.g. Staying at a Ryokan). I was also amazed and somewhat moved at the astonishing architecture of the Japanese Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. By viewing all this, enabled me to have a brief understanding in the richness and beauty of the Japanese culture therefore wanting to explore further in my studies.
Furthermore, visiting the Peace memorial museum in Hiroshima deeply engraved a strong impression in my mind. It enabled me to see the dangers and cruelness of war, and look back on history too see no matter being an offender of war or a victim, or even both, killing one another is definitely not the ultimate solution. I saw the people of Hiroshima was actual human beings and really felt sad and disgusted for what had happened to them. Even though I have learnt this part of history at school before, this kind of understanding is something I could not attain in textbooks. Moreover felt in a way spiritually connected with Hiroshima.
Although the diverse cultural experiences I had, I also saw the modern Japan and the strength and potential of the Japanese economy. We were introduced and shown to a lot of late Japanese technology, and I think for a lot of us, found future career possibilities in Japan.
After telling my friends at school about the things I witnessed in Japan, a lot of them showed great interest, some were also really envious and said they want to go too.
Lastly, but what I think will influence me thee most in wishing to carry on with my Japanese studies and go back to Japan is the sense of warmth in Japanese people. The teachers and staff at the Kansai Centre were always so kind to us, looking after us and making sure we were well in every physical and emotional aspect. Also during our 2 weeks period we meet many Japanese people from different ages and different walks of life, we were warmly welcomed into the country with great hospitality. We also made friends with local Japanese teenagers, overcoming language barriers. For me, a lot of Japanese people I encountered displayed a warm sense of “I care!” to me, which I think is something very special about the country.
平成１５年度高校生日本語学習奨励研修に関して…
この研修感想レポートを書く前に、在ニュージーランド日本大使館と国際交流基金と大阪府国際交流財団の皆様にお礼を申し上げたいと思います。
日本に行けた事は、私の宝となり、一生忘れられない素晴らしい経験をする事ができました。本当に有難うございました。
また、日本語を勉強する為のテキストブックを色々紹介して頂き、その上、頂いた図書券でテキストを買う事ができました。こうしたテキストは、これからの日本語の勉強にとても役立つと思います。
研修プログラムの間、茶道や生け花や伝統的な日本人の生活（旅館に泊まったこと）など、様々な日本の文化の豊かさを体験できました。日本のお寺や神社でも、建築の美しさに感心しました。これらを見れば見るほど、前より日本文化の美しさと、深さが分かるようになりました。そしてもっと勉強して、もっと日本のことが知りたいと思いました。
広島の原爆記念館が私の心に深く残りました。
記念館を見て、戦争の危険さと残酷さを知りました。戦争の加害者であっても被害者であっても殺し合う事は決して良くない事だと感じます。
記念館で原爆で亡くなってしまった人たちに、本当に逢ったような気持ちになり、言葉で言う事ができないとても悲しい気持ちになりました。このようなことは教科書では、得られない事です。広島で多くのことを感じて、学びました。
色々な伝統的な文化を経験しましたが、現在の日本の文化も多く見ました。日本の経済の強さや発展や工業技術も見ました。
それらを見て、将来日本で働く機会があるかも知れないと思いました。
ニュージーランドに帰った後、学校の友達に日本で見たり、聞いたりしたことを
話しました。友達はみんな羨ましがって、日本に行きたいと言っていました。
日本の人たちの温かさを知って、日本語の勉強を続ける事と、また日本に行きた
いと、強く思いました。
特に関西国際センターの先生やスタッフの皆さんが私たちを優しく、お世話して
下さいました。２週間の間に年齢の違う様々な日本人と会うことができ、とても親切
にして下さいました。また日本の同じぐらいの年の人と、言葉の壁を越えて、仲良く
なりました。
私が会った沢山の日本人は温かい「思いやり」の気持ちをくれました。それが日
本の文化を象徴していると思いました。
