The Japan Foundation

Applications for the 2012-2013 Japan Foundation programmes are now open.  The closing date for all applications is Thursday 1 December 2011, unless stated otherwise.


1. About The Japan Foundation

The Japan Foundation was established in 1972 as a special legal entity to undertake international cultural exchange and subsequently became an independent administrative institution in October 2003.

The Foundation consists of a head office in Tokyo, a branch office in Kyoto and two Japanese-language institutes (Urawa and Kansai). Overseas there are 22 Foundation offices in 20 countries. The closest being is in Sydney, Australia.

The purpose of the Japan Foundation is: to contribute to a better international environment, and to the maintenance and development of harmonious foreign relationships with Japan, through deepening other nations understanding of Japan, promoting better mutual understanding among nations, encouraging friendship and goodwill among the peoples of the world, and contributing to the world in culture and other fields through the efficient and comprehensive implementation of international cultural exchange activities.

The Japan Foundation carries out its programs and activities in the following three major categories: 1) Arts and Cultural Exchange, 2) Japanese-Language Education Overseas, 3) Japanese Studies Overseas and Intellectual Exchange.

2. Applications for 2012-2013 programmes

The Japan Foundation Programme 2012-2013 guidelines and application forms are now available in the section below. Completed applications, along with the necessary documents, must arrive at the appropriate office below by Thursday 1 December 2011 unless stated otherwise.  Some programmes have multiple application deadlines; please refer to the guidelines for each programme for detailed information.

The Japan Foundation will screen applications by March 2012, and decisions will be announced in April or May 2012.

2) Japanese-Language Education Overseas

Grant Program for Japanese Language Education Activities (FAQ)

This grant programme for Japanese Language Education Activities is a new programme and intends to promote Japanese-Language education in countries and regions where it is not possible to easily access direct support from Japan Foundation overseas offices by supporting a wide range of activities essential to the dissemination of Japanese-language and the development of Japanese-language education.
