  • SIGNING CEREMONY OF EXCHANGE OF NOTES FOR THE ODA LOAN EXTENDED TO SAMOA IN FISCAL YEAR 2007 FOR THE POWER SECTOR EXPANSION PROJECT
    (PRESS RELEASE
    )

The Government of Japan has decided to extend an ODA loan of up to a total of JP¥4.598 billion to the Government of the Independent State of Samoa.

Notes to this effect were exchanged in Apia today, 10 December 2007, between H.E. Mr Toshihiro Takahashi, Ambassador of Japan to the Independent State of Samoa and Hon. Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi, Prime Minister of Samoa.

This Project is the first application of Japanese resources to an Asian Development Bank (ADB) co-financed project under the Accelerated Co-Finance Scheme with the ADB (ACFA).

The project aims to secure the reliability and quality of power supply and expand capacity to meet the growing demand for power provided in an environmentally-friendly manner. Samoa has striven to implement the tri-annual “Strategy for Development of Samoa 2005-07 (SDS)” to promote Samoa’s future development. This project covers one of the priority areas of the SDS, “strengthening the private sector”, which could lead to positive economic growth in Samoa. The Government of Japan wishes that the project will be completed successfully within an appropriate time frame, and will have positive economic, social and environmental impacts on the future of Samoa.

The Government of Japan also extends its wish that the already existing friendly and cooperative relationship between Japan and Samoa will be further strengthened in the coming years.
