The Japan Foundation, established in 1972, serves as a specialised public agency dedicated to fostering international understanding through cultural exchange. Among its primary activities in arts, language, and studies, the foundation places a strong emphasis on visual arts by organising travelling exhibitions that tour the globe. These exhibitions, drawn from the foundation's own diverse collection, reach approximately 100 cities annually to introduce Japanese creativity to the world.
On this occasion, the Embassy of Japan presents “The Superlative Artistry of Japan” organised by the Japan Foundation. This cohesive collection spans from elaborate Meiji era kogei (traditional applied arts) works to contemporary art, including unique items like capsule toy figures and food samples. This exhibition highlights a diverse range of genres that share a common emphasis on highly skilled techniques, ingenious expressions, and a surprising level of perfection, tracing the lineage of Japanese artistry from the 19th-century Japonism trend to the present day.
Through this showcase, we aim to illuminate the outstanding techniques and the deep worlds of expression that transcend mere skill. The exhibition offers viewers a chance to appreciate a specific facet of Japan's creative culture—one that honors meticulous craftsmanship and devotion to the production process. We express our sincere gratitude to supervisor Mr. Yuji Yamashita and the participating artists, as well as Whirinaki Whare Taonga, for making this celebration of superlative artistry possible.
These seven videos below introduce the conceptual themes and illustrative examples of the exhibition. While many artworks featured here are not included in the physical display, we hope you enjoy discovering and appreciating some of the artworks presented in the exhibition hall.
