JLPT Japanese Language Proficiency Test in Christchurch

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is designed to meet the needs of Japanese language students who wish to test their skill level against the worldwide criteria. In this way, it is hoped the JLPT will stimulate interest in furthering Japanese studies.

IMPORTANT! CHANGES TO TEST TIMES FOR DECEMBER 7 TEST
Due to circumstances beyond our control we must change the times for the December 7 Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Test levels N3, N4, and N5 will now take place in the afternoon. There are slight changes to Levels N1 and N2. Please see the NEW timetable below:

Applications open:
Friday 1 August to Monday 25 August 2025
Examinees who require special testing accommodations for disabilities must complete their applications by Monday 25 August 2025.
Fees:
The fees for each level are as follows:
N1: $75.00, N2: $70.00, N3: $65.00, N4: $60.00, N5: $55.00
The test fee is non-refundable and the test date and site cannot be changed.
*Examinees who wish to have their test result sent overseas must pay an additional NZ$30 to cover overseas courier costs. The postage fee will be asked for when the result is sent.
Applications:
Each examinee can take ONE LEVEL only on the test day.
Any person wishing to enroll for the test should forward a completed application form (two identical photographs are required). Please refer below how to fill in the form.

Submitting application:
- A/ In person to Consular Office of Japan, 172 Hereford Street, Christchurch Monday - Friday 9.00 - 12.00 and 1.30 - 4.30
- B/ By post Consular Office of Japan in Christchurch, PO Box 13748, Christchurch 8140 Attention: JLPT
- Examinees are allowed to take one level only on the test day.
- Type into the first page of the editable PDF, and pages 2-5 will automatically be filled.
- Print out all 5 pages of the form on single-sided A4 paper and sign by hand.
- Glue 2 identical passport-sized photos, not photocopies, to the test vouchers.
- Appplications can be sent by post or brought into our office.
- Application forms will not be accepted by email.
- The test fee is non-refundable and the test date and site cannot be changed. If the test date is cancelled by our office due to COVID or other reasons, the test fee will be refunded.
- For questions 7, 10-14 please refer to test guide.
- The Examinee Registration Number will be filled out by the consulate.
- Application forms can also be picked up at the Consular Office of Japan in Christchurch, or sent by post if you supply an A4 stamped self-addressed envelope.
