Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) in Wellington, New Zealand
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) has been offered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES) since 1984 as a reliable means to evaluate and certify the Japanese proficiency of non-native speakers. In December 2018, there were 623,811 examinees at 232 cities, in 76 countries throughout the world.
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is offered once in Wellington in July, once in December in Christchurch every year. However the exams in Auckland take place twice a year in July and December.

- Changes To Test Times: Due to circumstances beyond our control, we must change the times for the July 6 Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Test levels N3, N4, and N5 will now take place in the afternoon. There are no changes to Levels N1 and N2. Please see the NEW timetable below:

On the examination day, please bring:
- Your Test Voucher
- Medium-soft black-lead pencils (either No.2 or HB)
- An eraser
- Photo identification such as a passport or driver's license
- A ball point-pen to write your address on a label for posting your exam result

Due to the limited number of spaces available, we may need to set restrictions depending on the number of applicants. Therefore, please complete your application and fee payment as early as possible. |
Payment must be made by bank transfer paid in advance to submission. Otherwise your application cannot be accepted.
Please be careful that the test fee is non-refundable. The test date and site cannot be changed in principle once you have submitted your application.
Note: Examinees who want their test results sent overseas must pay additional costs to cover overseas courier. The postage fee will be requested before sending the results.

Test Guidelines (9MB) - Please read these Guidelines first and use the Application Form below.
New restriction: The use of mobile phones/smartwatches during the JLPT, including during break periods, will be strictly prohibited. The details are in the Test Guidelines.
Application Form (1.1MB) - We recommend filling it in on the computer using Adobe Acrobat Reader - Information entered in the first page will autofill on pages 2 to 6 if Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed on your device.
Important: Special Testing Accommodations
If you require Special Testing Accommodations, please request a “Request Form for Special Testing Accommodations” by emailing us and submit this completed form along with your Application Form. Ensure that you check the box in the upper right corner of your Application Form. You may be asked to provide a medical certificate or similar documentation. As preparation takes time, late requests may not be accepted. Please be aware that due to spatial limitations, there is a limit to the number of separate rooms we can offer.
For those using the digital Application form above, please note the following:
- The information you enter into the Application form above may not be able to save.
- Please print out and submit all six pages (Single sided on A4 paper - Double sided one is not accepted.) of the Application Form including the Test Vouchers with a hand-written signature (digital signature is not acceptable).
- Please glue two identical ID photos on the Test Vouchers.
- For questions No. 7 and 10-14 on the Application form, please refer to the Test Guidelines.
- The Examinee Registration Number will be filled in by the Embassy.

Preparation books available in our library
There are various preparation and mock test books available at our library for N1 - N5. You can borrow up to 2 books for 2 weeks at a time. Proof of ID as well as a document that confirms your address (e.g. a utility bill, insurance bill or bank statement) are required to become a library member. These books are just a few examples.
