Lecture on Anime

19 and 20 September

Wednesday 19th Victoria University of Wellington 5.00pm

Thursday 20th Japan Information & Cultural Centre 6.00pm

A lecture, “Sexual Robots and Plastic Humans in Anime”, will be given by an Australian anime expert, Philip Brophy. You will get to know more about the fascinating world of Japanese animation films. No bookings required.

Anime, according to Brophy, “reinvents and reconfigures all we assume humanity and humanism to signify”.  He continues, “Sublime in its post-humanism, anime tells the story of a human who dreamt of being a robot and whose dream one day came true.”  The lecture is suitable for older high school students and adults.

Mr Brophy lectures in soundtrack and audio-visual concepts in the Media Arts course at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, but is also a musician, composer and filmmaker.  He recently curated an exhibition “Tezuka:  the Marvel of Manga” which showed in Melbourne, Sydney and San Francisco.  (A brief biography and photo are attached.)  Mr Brophy will also give a lecture in Auckland and Christchurch during his visit to New Zealand.  Please contact us if you would like to interview him while he is in Wellington.

The wonderful fantasy world of Japanimation by famous directors, such as Hayao Miyazaki, Mamoru Oshii, etc

It is impossible to discuss Japanese anime without mentioning Hayao Miyazaki, Katsuhiro Otomo and Mamoru Oshii.  These three were head and shoulders above their contemporaries in the 1980s and have been at the forefront of the animation world ever since.  The Embassy will be screening classics by these master directors:  Akira (Otomo), Patlabor Movie 1 (Oshii) and Kiki’s Delivery Service (Miyazaki).  Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell 2:  Innocence, made in 2004, will also screen during our anime week.

Please feel free to come along or bring family and friends to any of the above events ? Kiki’s Delivery Service is a particularly good film for younger children, while the other anime films are for older children and adults.
